Louisiana Contest Club meeting – April 2016

With the rain-out in Rayne, this was the first LCC meeting of 2016, and was held at the Northeast Louisiana (Monroe) Hamfest. In the absence of our President, the meeting was called to order at 11:30 by Sec/Treas, K5ER.

 Members present included WM5H, K5UZ, KV5J, W5WZ, K5ER and new member WA5VQP. Guests visiting were: W5KGT and KV8S

Financial reports were read and entered into the club records. 2016 dues were received from W5WZ, N5HMH and WA5VQP, and will be posted to the account and roster.

As required, the President’s budget was presented, explained line by line and subsequently approved. Budgeted items include: Domain renewal, yearly web hosting, supplies for LaQP certificates and postage, plaque sponsorship, doorprize to be donated for Ham-Com. Door prizes for LCC meetings was tabled until the next meeting.

A short report on LaQP 2016 was given. The deadline for log submissions will occur later this week and the scoring will begin shortly thereafter. The number of logs received is down this year, however there were several entrants who are now “repeat” participants in our event. It was noted that band conditions were much poorer on LaQP weekend this year. Once the logs are processed and scored, results will be posted on the LaQP.org web page. Once results are posted, certificates will be printed and mailed.

Currently, the LCC member roster as published on our web site does not include email addresses information. We have received comments both for and against including this information. Although the page containing the roster is user name and password protected, some were still leery about having their information available. After some discussion, it was voted that we should include the information, but have a system where members could “opt-in” or “opt-out”. Sec/Treas, along with Webmaster, shall develop a system in which members may have their info shown or hidden.

Plaque sponsorship for major contests - Since time has lapsed since the original info was collected, Sec/Treasurer is to follow up with the board and chose which plaques the club should sponsor (one per mode).

After discussion, it was voted that the club should look into the possible sponsorship of a statewide “State Parks on the Air” type activity. The thinking was to encourage activity by Amateurs within the state, incorporating some of the LaQP rules, and also somewhat mimic the NPOTA which ARRL is sponsoring in 2016. This could bring more attention to the diverse culture and beauty in the many state parks in Louisiana. Additionally, this would underscore the basis of Field Day, in which operators learn to set-up and operate stations in remote locations. ARRL Director Norris, K5UZ mentioned that there had been mention of this at the Division level, and so the event could grow into a division wide event.

Locations for the remaining LCC meetings in 2016 are: Shreveport and Pineville. Once we confirm dates and times with the respective sponsors, they will be posted on the web site.

Our presentation was to be given by KG5VK, however, he had an opportunity and plenty of help to dismantle more of his current station in preparation of building his massive new station in Texas. With all the rain we have had, we all understand the importance of timing and can appreciate someone taking the opportunity to work on antenna.

Instead, the Icom Radio News video of the K3LR super station was shown, which many, especially the new members really enjoyed.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at approximately 12:15.
